Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a technology use by cosmetic and medical practitioners to perform various skin treatments for aesthetics and therapeutic purposes, including hair removal, photo rejuvenation (e.g., the treatment of skin pigmentation, sun damage, and thread veins) as well as to alleviate dermatologic diseases such as acne.

BEFORE THE TREATMENT


1. Am I a good candidate for this treatment? Will this treatment work for me?

Although this device is safe for all skin types, the following lists are considered contraindicated to the IPL treatment:

  • IPL does not treat fine, blonde, white or grey hair. Brown or black hair respond the best.
  • Taking antibiotics. anti-inflammatory, herbal medications, and oral and topical medications known to cause photosensitivity such as acne medications (Accutane) and retinal at least one week prior and after the treatment. Talk to your pharmacist or physician to confirm photosensitive medication.
  • Botox and filler within one month prior to treating the face.
  • Facial Resurfacing within 2 months (aggressive peeling) or mild resurfacing within 2 weeks of treatment on the face.
  • Face Lift or eye surgery or any surgical procedure within 3 months if treatment on the face.
  • Pregnant and nursing and client below 18 years old.
  • Tanned or sunburned skin (no tanning for two weeks before and two weeks after)
  • Open wounds, history of keloid scarring (raised scars), herpes simplex, and moles on the area being treated, unless treatment is approved by a doctor
  • Possible side effects: Hyper-pigmentation, hypo-pigmentation, purpura (bruising), scarring, blistering, erythema (redness), edema (swelling) and a histamine reaction.


2. How many sessions will I need to see results?

Depending on the skin condition or hair type and the amount of hair present, the minimum number of treatments required is 5 to 6 for the IPL hair removal and 3 to 5 for the IPL skin rejuvenation, spaced 4 weeks apart to achieve best results.

3. Do I need to do anything to prepare for the treatment?
  • Disclosed all the medications (old and new) prior to treatment, like the photosensitive medications (antibiotics, NSAIDs, etc.)
  • Inform for any history of recurrent Herpes Simplex. Treatment can begin with a preventive regimen and with a doctor’s approval.
  • Avoid the sun (including self-tanners) for 2-4 weeks prior.
  • Stop using peels (home use chemical peels) at least 7 days prior to and after the procedure.
  • Do not indoor/outdoor tan, at least 12 days prior to and after the procedure.
  • Avoid tweezing, waxing, bleaching and electrolysis 4 weeks prior.
  • Shaving in between treatments is allowed. Shave the area one day prior to the treatment. No epilation throughout services (we need the hair bulb).
  • Skin must be clean prior to treatment.
  • Do not use deodorant prior to underarm treatment
  • Avoid all medications that might make you photosensitive (e.g., NSAID, antibiotics). Avoid taking them on the day of the laser treatment.
  • Tattoos that are in the area to be treated must be shown to the technician before every treatment, as tattoos need to be avoided.
  • Remove jewelry in the area to be treated. Make sure the skin is clean (no makeup or cream).


DURING THE TREATMENT


1. How long does a treatment session last?

Depending on the treated area, the minimum treatment time is between 10 minutes to an hour.

2. What does the treatment feel like?

It is normal to feel a pin-prick like sensation or snapping of a rubber band and warm feeling with every flashes. The range of pain scale is between 4 to 5, depends on individual’s pain tolerance.

3. Will it be painful?

Pain scale is between 4 to 5, or even less or more depending on the client’s pain tolerance or sensitivity to discomfort.

AFTER THE TREATMENT


1. How will I feel after my treatment?

Your skin may be red, there may be some swelling, and you might experience some hair burning throughout. These are signs of a good result. The area may be sensitive for a couple of days. Cold compress using cool clean cloth or Ice packs can be applied, if needed. It is always recommended to consult with your treatment provider if you notice any unusual results such as blistering.

2. Is there any downtime required?

There is no downtime, and you should be able to continue your normal daily activities soon following the treatment.

3. Do I need to do anything after my treatment?

Your treatment provider may recommend you use sunblock daily with SPF 30 or more; avoid harsh soaps after 2 to 4 days following the treatment; and to treat like a mild sunburn by avoiding chorine, hot tubs, hot showers or highly fragranced lotion at least 24-48 hours to prevent irritations.
